Influential Mathematician Visits Campus as Part of Lecture Series

Dr. Ken Ono of Emory University will visit Baylor to present a pair of lectures as part of the tenth annual Baylor Undergraduate Lecture Series in Mathematics.

WACO, Texas – Members of the Baylor community will have the chance this week to meet one of the world’s most accomplished mathematicians as Dr. Ken Ono visits the campus to present a lecture as part of the tenth annual Baylor Undergraduate Lecture Series in Mathematics.

Ono, currently the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics at Emory University, is one of the world’s most influential number theorists and a widely recognized expert on the life and work of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

The first lecture, “Polya’s Program for the Riemann Hypothesis and Related Problems,” will cover recent developments by Ono and his colleagues that build on prior understanding to produce a theorem that can be used to prove other important mathematical conjectures.

His second lecture, “Ramanujan: The Man Who Knew Infinity,” will present some of Ramanujan’s work and share some of what made his unconventional life story an inspiration to Ono and others. The presentation will include clips from the 2016 motion picture about Ramanujan on which Ono served as associate producer and mathematical consultant.

Both lectures are free and open to the public and will be interesting and accessible to mathematicians and non-mathematicians alike.
