Schedule and Deadlines
Application Deadline & Schedule of IRB Meetings
IRB submission deadlines (for full committee review) and a listing of IRB meeting dates.
Full Committee Review
The IRB meets once per month to review initial applications, amendments, and continuing reviews of research projects. Full Committee Review requires more preparation time for both the investigator and the committee than expedited reviews or exempted research. Complete submission materials are due according to the deadline dates noted above.
Expedited Review
The IRB Chair, or designee, may review on behalf of the full committee, and give expedited approval to particular types of protocols. Expedited protocols are reviewed as they are received (assuming all required materials have been submitted with the application and all members of the research team have completed human subjects training). A minimum of two weeks is required for expedited reviews and notification. (When the University is closed for holidays, please allow additional time for review, equivalent to the time Baylor is closed.)
Exemptions
Exemptions may be granted by the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) for certain research projects. Research investigators cannot make the final determination of exemption for their own studies. Only ORC can designate an activity as "exempt." All research involving human participants must therefore be submitted for review. Please allow up to 2 weeks for a determination of exemption.
Non-Human Subject Research Determination (Non-HSR)
Researchers are welcome to submit a non-HSR application for a formal determination that a specific activity does not meet the definition of human subject research. Please allow up to 2 weeks for a determination of non-HSR.
