NIH Updated Data Management and Sharing Plan Elements

NIH has released  NOT-OD-26-046 announcing changes to the Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP). Per the notice, NIH encourages data management and sharing practices that align with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and reflect best practices within specific research communities.

NIH will provide an updated DMSP template once OMB clearance is received. This new policy will be effective for applications with due dates on or after May 25, 2026, and all applicants will be required to use the new, simplified format. If you have questions or need assistance, please reach out to your Pre-Award University Research Administrator.

Prior Approval for Domestic Subawards

Effective June 1, 2026, any domestic subaward added to an active NIH award must be submitted through the Prior Approval Module in eRA Commons. Requests submitted outside of this module will not be accepted. This requirement is outlined in NIH Notice NOT-OD-26-065 : Prior Approval for Domestic Subawards.

PAPPG Policy Revisions

The following sections of the PAPPG are revised to align with NSF's Gold Standard Science implementation plan:
  1. Public Access to Research Products (Chapter XI.D.2.c)
  2. Dissemination and Sharing of Research Results (Chapter XI.D.4)
  3. Data Management and Sharing Plan (Chapter II.D.2.(i).(ii))

Please note that the revised NSF Data Management and Sharing Plan policy specifies that the plan must be generated using the new tool within Research.gov.
