Grant Writing Seminars

Planning and Writing Successful Grant Proposals

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research at Baylor University is pleased to offer a grant-writing seminar presented by Dr. M. S. (Peg) AtKisson of AtKisson Training Group. This comprehensive, one-day seminar will be presented in person.

Seminar Date:

Wed., January 11, 2023
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Breakfast, lunch and snacks provided
Check-in/snacks: Baylor Sciences Building room E.227
Workshop: BSB room E.125

Note that this year there will not be recordings available after the event.

The session will combine lecture format and activities and will cover a breadth of potential funding targets. The session is designed to convey the fundamentals of proposal writing — concepts backed up with concrete tips and operational strategies — while also providing tools for planning and longer-term sustainability.

Topics will include:

  • Assessing readiness, identifying funder priorities and setting timelines for crafting the submission
  • Strategies for preparing the all-important first page of the proposal - the NIH Specific Aims page, NSF or USDA Overview, or the opening page of any proposal to any funder
  • Clear and compelling ways to present the preliminary data, the foundational literature, and the research plan using concrete writing strategies
  • Additional pieces of a proposal, including title and abstract, budgets, and writing style

All participants will receive handouts and ATG's Handbook for Planning and Writing Successful Grant Proposals. The Handbook is designed to accompany the seminar and includes in-depth discussion of the grant writing process, starting with the early stages of planning your project. Read the Handbook Introduction.

At the conclusion of the seminar, faculty researchers should have a broader understanding of the grant planning, writing, and review process, the ability to make less arbitrary and more informed writing decisions, and an understanding of the network of research support at their universities.

The seminar series is open to all full-time Baylor faculty members, postdoctoral researchers and research staff.
